  1. Venus from 450,000 miles.
  2. Caption: Venus imaged in ultraviolet light by the Mariner 10 spacecraft on 7 February 1974 from a distance of 450,000 miles. The image is constructed from a mosaic of computer-enhanced and retouched frames. The cloud bands show up in ultraviolet light but the opaque atmosphere is almost featureless in visible light.
